University of Mumbai

The University of Mumbai (known earlier as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It was established in 1857 along with Universities of Madras and Calcutta and presently imparts education through direct and distance mode, to more than 6,50,000 students. With 60 Post-Graduate Department, over 667 affiliated Colleges along with about 104 affiliated Institutes, the University of Mumbai is also one of the largest Universities in the Country and conducts more than 1000 examinations for various programmes from Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate and Doctoral Degrees throughout the year. It prides itself on its academic achievements, examination reforms and infrastructure developments over the year.

Its geographical jurisdiction encompasses 5 coastal Districts of Maharashtra namely Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. It has satellite campuses with PG centers at Fort campus, Vidyanagari campus, Ratnagiri campus, Thane campus and Kalyan campus.

The profile of the University carved out in 157 years of its functioning attests to its manifold achievements as the intellectual and moral powerhouse of the society. The University has always given its best to the country in general and to the city of Mumbai in particular by enthusiastically shouldering an ever-growing load of social and educational responsibilities.

The University was granted the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” by MHRD. Around 12 of University’s 60 Post-graduate Departments/sections are under various national programmes, such as SAP/ CAS/ DRS/ DSA/ COSIST/ FIST. The University was re-accredited with ‘A’ grade in 2012 by NAAC. In its quest to realize its potential for excellence, our University is taking several new initiatives for examination reforms, academic reforms like credit-grading-semester system at UG and PG level, granting autonomy to colleges and departments, international collaborations with foreign institutions of higher learning, setting up of a state of the art Virtual Classroom which is connected with 423 affiliated colleges/institutions, etc.
